Canada’s National Observer seeks a business reporter

  • Title: Business Journalist
  • Employment Type: Full-time, 3 year project
  • Supervisor: Reports directly to the Project Managing Editor
  • Salary Range: $80,000 to $90,000 annually, based on experience
  • Start Date: Expected to begin on April 15
  • Location: Remote, Toronto/GTA ideal but will consider other locations

  • Recognition for Reporting: Your work has been recognized with 3 to 5 citations or awards for excellence in business reporting, underscoring your commitment to quality and impactful journalism.
  • Collaborative Spirit: You are a team player with a love for collaboration, known for your strong communication skills and ability to work well with others.

As the Climate Business Journalist for CNO, your beat will focus on the intersection of innovation, technology, and climate change solutions within Canada. Your expertise lies not only in understanding the intricacies of business and environmental dynamics but also in recognizing and exploring the potential of diverse business sectors and practices in contributing to climate solutions.

Your reporting will target business and finance professionals, offering them news that is not only informative but also actionable and applicable to their fields.

Your responsibilities will extend beyond writing to include the monitoring, tracking, and documentation of the impact your articles have, utilizing various metrics to gauge their influence.

This position may occasionally require multi-day travel, once or twice annually, alongside regional day trips. There is also the potential for international travel during the second and third years of employment.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
