Business Observer seeks a reporter

Do you have a nose for news and eye for details?

Then you should be a reporter for the Business Observer.

The Business Observer — in print and digital formats — is the leading source of business news on the west coast of Florida, covering nine busy, news-rich counties, from Polk south to Collier. We write stories for business leaders about business leaders that inform and inspire and leave readers with takeaways to be better at running their business. We take our mantra — Florida’s newspaper for the C-Suite — seriously.

Our small-but-mighty team is growing and we seek a reporter who gets what we do, and wants to get after it. This reporter is someone who is comfortable chasing leads, building sources and can do both consistently. We also seek someone comfortable writing a bit of everything: breaking news for our website, short, newsy stories for the print edition and meaty cover-worthy, magazine-style business pieces that get readers talking — and learning something.

Our readers range from startup CEOs and serial entrepreneurs to billion-dollar bank executives and leaders of some of the region’s largest companies.  We know their time is valuable, so we cater our stories to their needs. We don’t write fluff, but we also don’t tear down businesses. Something we say a lot: Be curious. Don’t be cynical.

It’s a specialized kind of reporting and writing: we go into every interview, every story budget meeting, every story idea with one song on a loop in our heads: think like a business owner. We let the competitors tell readers the what — we show our readers the how and the why.

This kind of niche reporting and writing requires a lot of the expected traits: a fast learner, a super-strong team player and, especially, a willingness to push yourself to a different style of reporting and writing.

Does this describe you? Then please send a resume and three published clips to Mark Gordon at mgordon@businessobserverfl.com
