Bloomberg seeks a Seoul bureau chief

Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from intraday coverage through to in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It’s what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time.

Whether it’s geopolitics or culture, one Asian country punches well above its size on the global stage: South Korea. Home to K-pop sensations such as New Jeans and BTS as well as films including Squid Games, it’s a global soft power in its own right. At the same time, it’s an industrial power house — ship building, chip manufacturing, autos, to name but a few. And all this despite a volatile political system that last year saw a martial law declaration by the sitting president dissolve within six hours. Telling the story of business and finance in a country of so many contradictions and cross currents can be challenging, but it’s also immensely rewarding.

As Seoul bureau chief, you will lead a newsroom of 20 plus reporters writing in English and Korean, helping them capture the biggest stories for the Bloomberg audience across all platforms and formats. Working closely with beat experts, you will oversee all our coverage, from daily markets reporting to ambitious multi-media features. You will be responsible both for the day-to-day coverage and to help develop and execute a longer-term strategy for the newsroom, integrating AI tools, brainstorming ideas on how to elevate and expand our coverage to help us make an impact, both locally and globally.

We’ll trust you to:
Demonstrate outstanding news judgement
Write and edit clear and comprehensive stories under pressure
Guide the bureau to break news and produce high-quality enterprise pieces
Build strong relationships with various teams and platforms
Manage the bureau effectively by proactively handling coverage and personnel issues as they arise, and supporting the career development of all bureau members
Be an ambassador for Bloomberg News to build our visibility and profile

You will need to have:
At least 5 years of experience working in business journalism
Proven writing/editing skills, preferably across multiple business subjects
Previous management experience, ability to work in a high pressure environment
Strong leadership and communication skills to work collaboratively with reporters and various stakeholders
Fluency in both spoken and written English, Korean language proficiency will be a plus
Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization
