Bloomberg seeks a reporter in Hong Kong

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated China-focused reporter to join our Macro Markets team, based in Hong Kong. With China under the global spotlight amid an economic slowdown and escalating tensions with the US, this is an opportunity to be at the forefront of the action. The beat covers everything from the impact of a possible trade war to Beijing’s attempts to manage both the bond and currency markets to the ongoing internationalization of the yuan. A dynamic and fast-paced role, it requires the ability to write on the intersection of markets, the economy and geopolitics, presenting news and analysis that’s indispensable for both the local and international audiences.

You will have the opportunity to work and collaborate with our team of expert reporters and editors both locally and across the region. You will be expected to explain China’s markets to a broad global audience, pounce on price action and publish quick stories to reflect developments. Such reporting will form the foundations for broader, more impactful and ambitious stepback stories. You will also keep in touch with and publish interviews with, the smartest, biggest and most respected names in the industry.

We’ll trust you to:

– Write with authority and insight about China’s financial markets including bonds, currency and short-term interest rates, capturing the elements of both “what’s happening” and “what it means” against the backdrop of local and global trends
– Cultivate a broad network of investors, traders and other market participants as sources to help break news and build deeper stories that explain market activity or analyze trends
– Identify and interpret broader themes in currencies and rates, drawing upon expertise from across the market and the Bloomberg newsroom to help generate impactful stories that set the agenda for investors and policymakers

You’ll need to have:
– At least 5 years of recent experience in financial journalism
– A track record of breaking news on beat coverage in finance, economics or markets or experience generating – outstanding and exclusive market reporting and analysis
– The ability to tap into a wide variety of contacts, ranging from traders and investors to the biggest money managers, government officials and policy makers
– A knack for generating story ideas and finding the narrative in numbers, plus the dexterity to turn complex subjects into stories
– A collaborative team spirit, the drive to innovate and a strong work ethic
– Proficiency in both spoken and written English. Chinese language ability is desirable but not essential
– Demonstrated continuous career and personal growth within an organization
