As deputy news director, you are responsible for overseeing the operations of our legal and regulatory teams covering subjects such as labor and employment, intellectual property, privacy, bankruptcy, securities, health, and antitrust, to name a few.

You will be responsible for working with other news leaders to pinpoint the most important stories of the day, coaching journalists to work those issues and to uncover and report larger trend pieces, features, and analysis.

What you will do:

• Set coverage priorities for your team, determining which are the most important stories of the day and bringing the resources of the newsroom to ensure we own those stories.

• Coordinate with the central news team to get graphics or videos where appropriate, all to ensure our top stories are presented in the best way possible.

• Work with reporters to ensure they produce quality journalism.

• Help the entire team to develop the muscles needed to deliver real-time news as well as appropriate follow up stories.

• Coordinate with others across our newsroom and with our counterparts at Bloomberg News.

What you will need to have:

• Excellent leadership, news judgment, editing, and story-management skills.

• Strong and thoughtful analytical and decision making, and the ability to assess which items need to be handled with urgency and which should be considered further.

• Effective change management skills and ability to help drive the group.

• Demonstrated ability to unpack complicated legal and government actions and help reporters make them interesting.

• Demonstrated ability to develop relationships and influence news reporting and editing.

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and ability to show those skills on tight deadlines.

• Knowledge of digital news and information publishing operations.

• Minimum 7+ years’ experience as an editor and manager in a news role.
