Job Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on, visionary, and strategic Editor-in-Chief to lead the editorial direction of BCBusiness. This role is responsible for developing and executing an innovative editorial strategy, managing a talented team of contributors, and ensuring all content, across print and digital platforms meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
The Editor-in-Chief will play a pivotal role in shaping the magazine’s voice, maintaining its reputation as the go-to source for business news and insights, and growing its influence within British Columbia’s business community.
Key Responsibilities:
Editorial Leadership and Strategy:
- Develop and execute a forward-thinking editorial strategy that aligns with the magazine’s mission and business goals.
- Define and uphold the magazine’s tone, style, and voice, ensuring it reflects the dynamic and diverse business community in British Columbia.
- Identify and capitalize on emerging business trends and issues to deliver timely, relevant, and impactful content.
Content Management and Quality:
- Oversee the creation of engaging, high-quality content, including features, profiles, editorials, and multimedia assets.
- Ensure all content is fact-checked, accurate, and adheres to the highest editorial standards.
- Approve final drafts for publication across all platforms, ensuring consistency in voice and quality.
Team Leadership:
- Manage, mentor, and inspire the editorial team, including the associate editor and freelance contributors.
- Foster a collaborative and creative culture that encourages innovation and professional growth.
- Set clear goals and expectations, monitor performance, and ensure deadlines are met across the team.
Publication Timelines and Workflow:
- Enforce strict publication schedules for print and digital content, ensuring seamless coordination between editorial, design, and production teams.
- Streamline workflows and manage resources to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
Audience Engagement:
- Develop strategies to deepen engagement with readers through social media, newsletters, and other digital channels.
- Collaborate with marketing to leverage audience data and feedback to refine content strategies and maximize reach.
Industry and Community Representation:
- Represent BCBusiness at key business and industry events, building relationships with thought leaders, influencers, and stakeholders.
- Serve as the face of the brand within the business community to enhance its reputation and influence.
- Represent the magazine by hosting events, including moderating panel discussions and emceeing awards ceremonies.
Collaboration and Business Support:
- Partner with marketing, sales, and design teams to create content that aligns with the magazine’s goals and enhances its overall impact.
- Work with sales team to integrate branded content opportunities without compromising editorial integrity.
Budget Management:
- Oversee the editorial budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and adherence to financial objectives.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in an editorial leadership role, preferably in business journalism or a news publication.
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality, engaging editorial content across platforms.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with expertise in fact-checking and maintaining editorial accuracy.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a diverse team.
- In-depth knowledge of British Columbia’s business landscape and the key issues affecting the region.
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools, SEO, and analytics platforms.
- Superior organizational and time management skills, with the ability to enforce strict publication schedules.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and represent the brand externally.
- Commitment to attending business and industry events, both during and outside regular office hours, to foster relationships and enhance the magazine’s presence in the community.
