Automotive News seeks mobility finance reporter

Automotive News, an influential and dynamic news organization owned by Crain Communications Inc., is seeking a seasoned reporter who can follow the money financing the mobility industry.

This person will play a key role in our coverage of transportation technology and mobility. This position calls for a versatile journalist with high integrity and proven experience covering technology and/or business for credible news organizations.

From startups to large public companies, this reporter will craft stories on the financing underpinning advanced transportation technology. They’ll cover the venture capital firms pouring billions into the sector and bring expertise on the dynamics driving Wall Street’s posture toward traditional auto companies and technology startups alike.

They’ll bring a document frame of mind and find stories and trends in SEC filings. They’ll cover IPOs and bankruptcies, explore why Wall Street lost its love for electric-vehicle startups, and explain why insurance companies are interested in driver-assist technology.

Candidates must have strong reporting and meticulous writing skills. Candidates must be capable of balancing real-time and long-term story priorities.

This position will require occasional travel, along with some availability during off hours when news breaks. This position can be based remotely. It offers excellent pay and benefits.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be based in the United States.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a passion for breaking news and scoops.
  • Successful professional journalism experience with credible, respected news organizations.
  • Proven reporting and writing talents with attention to style, detail and nuance.
  • Must be able to work quickly and accurately in real-time.
  • Exemplary teamwork skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant program.

Preferences

  • Proven technology or business industry coverage experience.
  • Experience covering beats within transportation or technology.
  • Track record of exclusives and scoops.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, on video, podcasts or other platforms.
  • Proven track record of quality and productivity.
  • Strong source development skills.
  • Brings a document frame of mind; adept at finding stories in public records and SEC filings.
  • Experience using Chartbeat and other audience-analytics tools in engaging readers and evaluating performance of coverage.
