The role

This is an outstanding opportunity to join the Financial Times as Executive Opinion Editor. In this exciting role, which functions as the second on the desk, you will work with a dynamic team, commissioning, shaping, and editing world-class commentary. You will lead the team in the absence of the editor, ensuring the quality of our articles and maintaining the high standards of our publication.

Responsibilities: 

  • Commission and edit columns from both internal and external contributors, longer news profiles, quick takes and notebooks from our correspondents.
  • Build and maintain good relations with high-profile external contributors while ensuring that their copy fits the standards of the FT
  • Manage the day-to-day flow of the Features desk, stepping in for the editor as needed.
  • Work with in-house columnists, solving any issues that arise promptly and effectively.
  • Manage and evaluate the enormous number of pitches we handle each day, keeping an eye out for the good, unexpected or quirky.
  • Attend news conferences regularly, participate in all desk rotas and contribute to the Opinion newsletter.

Key skills:

  • Proven experience in a senior editorial role.
  • A constant stream of timely commissioning ideas and the ability to execute them
  • A robust network of wide-ranging contacts
  • Superb editing skills
  • The ability to to work quickly and accurately under pressure
  • The capacity to range across many subject areas and the confidence to make sure columns work for generalist readers as well as expert ones.
  • Strong diplomatic skills to help manage a high volume of pitches and provide timely responses.
  • Outstanding organisational skills

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
