Financial Times is hiring a Financial Reporter to work on Unhedged, our new daily email newsletter on markets and finance. The role is an entry-level position to work directly with the newsletter’s columnist, Robert Armstrong, the US financial commentator. It will entail digging into economic and financial data to build clear narratives using words, charts and data.
Although a strong background in data analytics is preferred, the successful candidate will be trained on the use of multiple data platforms (Bloomberg, Refinitiv, Capital IQ) in order to contribute in a deadline-sensitive, daily publishing environment. You’ll also be comfortable calling busy Wall Street executives to ask detailed questions about fast-moving events. This is an exciting opportunity for early-career journalists with interests in financial and economic matters who are comfortable with technology.
The position comes with a one-year contract, but the successful candidate may have the opportunity to move elsewhere within the FT. There will also be opportunities to work for other parts of the New York-based reporting team once commitments to Unhedged are met.
Key responsibilities
Work directly with the US financial commentator on ideas for daily Unhedged newsletter
Research and compile charts and graphics based on market-moving data
Call traders, analysts and bankers on Wall Street to discuss market movements and gather information on investing trends
Respond to requests for research and reporting on deadline in a fast-paced news environment
Help with editing, production and distribution of Unhedged
Work with other reporters in the New York bureau to develop and expand reporting skills
Your skills
You will have a great eye for news, generate market moving insights and have an ability to translate complex market concepts into simple language for our readers.
A background in, or knowledge of data analytics would be beneficial
Excellent communication skills, confident speaking with a variety of audiences
An avid interest in financial and economic subject matters
Technically proficient, and a fast learner – we will train you in the use of multiple data platforms
