FT seeks a China business and finance reporter in Hong Kong

The Financial Times is seeking a China Business and Finance Reporter to join its Asian editorial headquarters in Hong Kong. This is a new role that will focus on coverage of corporations and financial institutions in mainland China, along with the deal-making activity they generate. With some of the world’s most dynamic and fast-growing businesses to write about, this is an opportunity to get on the front page and build your journalism career.

Despite the recent crisis at Evergrande and the regulatory changes under Xi Jinping’s ‘common prosperity’ campaign, foreign investors still have a strong appetite for China. There is some flexibility on the specifics of the job role depending on the skills and experience of the candidate. You could support our technology team on coverage of internet behemoths such as Tencent and Alibaba, look to the enormous Chinese banking sector, chase Chinese companies listed on foreign exchanges, or dig into state-owned industrial players to find stories.

Since the role is based in Hong Kong, there is somewhat less scope for stories about consumer trends in China, but we have a strong appetite for interviews with mainland entrepreneurs and chief executives, as well as colourful business sagas. Although it is not the focus of the job, there is also opportunity to write across the range of FT formats, from analysis to columns and magazine features, if you have the aptitude and the interest.

You will be working with a team of first-class journalists based in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Mutual support and teamwork is part of the role. You will be able to travel when needed; you may also be asked to represent the FT at events and work on podcasts or video.
