Fresnoland is looking for a reporter who can tell powerful, impactful stories that shed light on economic inequality in the central San Joaquin Valley and what can and is being done to improve working conditions for all.
The ideal candidate will be adept at building sources in the community, outside of government institutions; be well-read on state and local labor and economic policy, research, and trends; be willing to explore how immigration impacts workers; a strong writer who can make policy and process accessible and useful for diverse audiences; and, be comfortable digging through public documents, data, and using public records.
The reporter should also be creative at finding new ways of telling stories on their beat, and for the diverse communities of the region; and, they should be passionate about using reporting to improve quality of life and work for all, especially those who work in low-wage jobs or have barriers to economic mobility.
Responsibilities:
- Reporting consistent stories on your beat that help the diversity of communities in our region understand the challenges faced by workers and small business owners
- Balancing longer-term investigative and feature projects with shorter term service and explanatory stories that provide useful information for the communities we serve
- Identify opportunities to tell stories in creative ways off-platform, using video and social media
- Sharing reporting across other media platforms and with other media partners
- Representing Fresnoland at community events and on panels
Relevant skills:
- At least two years of reporting experience in a newsroom
- Ability to write simply about complex issues
- Comfortable reporting in and with the community
- Experience with content management systems, especially WordPress, is a plus
- Spanish, Hmong, or Punjabi language proficiency is strongly preferred
- Commitment to Fresnoland values around equity, inclusion, and fairness
- Comfort with Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok is a plus
