Franklin News Foundation – The Center Square, seeks an apprentice reporter

An apprentice reporter for The Center Square is a journalist near the beginning of their professional career who spends a year under the guidance of experienced editors who will train them on the news gathering, reporting and writing process. The Center Square reports the news on public policy and other matters of interest to taxpayers across the U.S., and apprentice reporters will help us further that mission.  This is a paid position, and successful completion of the apprenticeship program could lead to a full-time job at The Center Square.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • With guidance from the managing editor, report on legislative and policy issues across the U.S. and their impact on taxpayers. Energy and health care-related issues will be among the topics of focus.
  • Use public records and databases to ferret out waste, fraud and abuse.
  • Publish 5 news stories each week that demonstrate the fiscal and economic impact of public policy on the daily lives of taxpayers.
  • Generate relevant story ideas with frequency, and discuss with managing editor.
  • Cultivate trusted sources to provide leads on potential stories, including those inside and outside government, think tanks, academia, unions and the business community.
  • Monitor the media landscape to identify popular topics and potential media partners.

Qualifications:

  • College degree preferred.
  • In the first few years of journalism career.
  • Strong writing, research, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Passionate about our mission
  • Familiarity with key policy issues.
  • Ability to uncover original/breaking news stories.
  • Self-starter mentality and ability to work independently.
