Fortune seeks an executive news editor

Fortune is hiring an Executive News Editor to build and run a global breaking news division.

This is a leadership position that reports to Fortune’s Editor in Chief.

As Executive News Editor, you will oversee all stories in front of Fortune’s paywall. You’ll manage a team of editors and reporters across Fortune’s bureaus in Asia, Europe and the US.

You’ll create 24/7 coverage to help readers stay on top of the most important business headlines. Your teams will write about the biggest stories in tech, markets and finance. You will hire and train your team to write quickly, determining the most interesting angles and analyzing the significance of the news.

When you find a topic readers are curious about, you’ll coach your team to flood the zone on it, producing numerous quick stories to fill readers’ appetites.

The ideal candidate will be based in New York or London, but candidates elsewhere are encouraged to apply.

As Executive News Editor you will:

  • Have a strong sense of the top business stories that should lead Fortune.com
  • Recruit a global team of editors and reporters
  • Quickly execute assignments so Fortune is leading the news cycle
  • Understand what makes a compelling headline and train your team to find the most interesting angles. SEO knowledge is a plus.
  • Grow Fortune’s readership by making business news stories fast and approachable to a wider audience.
  • Be entrepreneurial and creative. We are looking for someone with a compelling vision to show us how an efficient news operation should run.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Outstanding story sense
  • Ability to assign and edit stories across key industries such as tech, finance, markets
  • Experience running a breaking news operation
  • Strong management and team building skills

Fortune’s headquarters is in NYC, but our editorial team is based across time zones and international borders. We’re working remotely due to the pandemic. We encourage applicants between the coasts to apply.
