Fortune.com seeks deputy editor

The Deputy Editor for Fortune.com will serve a critical role in the digital expansion of the brand, which boasts massive franchises like Most Powerful Women and 100 Best Companies to Work For. This is a key role for a detail-oriented manager with a deep knowledge of business and financial news. Performance in the job will be measured by the basic metrics of audience growth and engagement, as well as by staff performance and retention.

You will:

  • Work closely with the Digital Editor of Fortune to develop and implement strategic initiatives to grow audience engagement.
  • Help manage and motivate a staff of roughly 40 people, while driving culture change for a broader staff of twice that size
  • Drive integrated print and digital content experience initiatives
  • Manage both daily story budget and long-term editorial planning
  • Generate feature ideas for both the Web and Fortune magazine

You have:

  • At least 7 years of experience in tech, financial news, or hard news journalism
  • At least 3 years of experience managing in a real-time/digital news organization.
  • A passion for financial news and digital storytelling, and a dedication to the highest standards of journalism.
  • A desire to mentor a team of journalists navigating the digital landscape.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
