First Amendment Watch (FAW) seeks a managing editor/project manager

First Amendment Watch (FAW), a news and educational online resource of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at NYU, is seeking a managing editor with project management experience to contribute to the growth of our project. FAW covers news of the many conflicts involving freedom of speech and press and presents original legal and historical analysis. First Amendment Watch also produces original teaching materials on free speech for college and university courses. FAW receives foundation funding and NYU support for its operations.

Qualifications:

The Managing Editor of the First Amendment Watch Project will have the following major responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily research operations of the First Amendment Watch website, including daily production of editorial material and setting and enforcing deadlines for projects and personnel.
  • Supervise the work of a research staff writer plus other contributors including consultants, students, and designers.
  • Conduct research on contemporary First Amendment issues, utilizing primary and secondary source material including historical documents from the founding period and later, Supreme Court opinions, and law review articles. Supervise staff members doing similar research.
  • Research, write and post material to the website and produce a weekly newsletter.
  • Propose and initiate new editorial research projects and partnerships that further the mission of First Amendment Watch.
  • Create, implement, and oversee an ambitious research plan using social media and other strategies to promote the website with various audiences.
  • Plan research related events, including panel discussions and conferences.
  • Initiate contacts with other groups in the First Amendment field and develop collaborations and alliances with them.
  • Spearhead fundraising efforts, including contacts with potential donors, writing funding proposals, and coordinating with NYU’s development office.
  • Write and file required reports with funders.
  • Manage budget in collaboration with the Carter Journalism Institute’s administrative officers, ensuring accurate tracking and projection of expenditures.
  • Serve as a representative of the website and related research with funders, university administrators, collaborators, and others.
  • Represent First Amendment Watch at professional events.

Occasional travel to conferences and events required.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $40,000 – $100,000.
