This position reports to the Beijing Bureau Chief as part of a team of around half a dozen reporters based in Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen. Specific reporting beats will be assigned later depending on the experience of the candidate and the needs of the bureau but the focus will be on corporate and finance coverage.
Key duties:
– Pitching, reporting and filing daily news quickly, accurately and cleanly to the Hong Kong news desk
– Regularly delivering excellent longer analysis pieces
– Working closely with colleagues to ensure we are on top of the biggest China stories
– In consultation with colleagues and editors and under the guidance of the Beijing Bureau Chief, conceptualizing and delivering longer and more in depth enterprise reporting projects
– Demonstrate numeracy and proficiency in handling data, the ability to explain analyses confidently
– Produce simple charts and identify opportunities to collaborate with Visual and Data Journalism team
– Report across all digital platforms and engage with our audience through social media
– Weekend shifts are required as part of the team rota
Who we are looking for
The successful candidate will ideally have extensive experience working as a journalist for a major news organisation in China. The unique challenges of working in the People’s Republic make it preferable for this person to already be comfortable in this difficult environment. A proven track record of scoops, excellent writing skills, maturity and the ability to operate independently but collaboratively are all essential. The candidate must have demonstrated a strong interest and ability in corporate, financial and business reporting. Candidates without this will not be considered.
Fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese is strongly preferred. The successful candidate may be asked to undertake hostile environment training.
