The vacancy is for an experienced foreign policy reporter based in Washington DC
The reporter will be responsible for covering a broad range of international policy and geopolitical issues related to the global energy sector, including sanctions, international relations, trade policy, climate diplomacy, multilateral finance, energy policy, and producer-consumer relations for daily and weekly publications. There will be a strong emphasis on US policy, but the beat also includes wider foreign policy coverage out of Washington.
We are looking for a proactive and energetic reporter able to establish a broad range of government and industry contacts, generate leads, and produce original, thought-provoking analysis of international affairs. The reporter will work closely with our broader team of energy and geopolitical specialists in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Some international experience is preferred.
As the reporter builds out their expertise, they will have the opportunity to act as an Energy Intelligence subject matter expert in client meetings, conferences, webinars, videos, and media appearances.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as part of the global team covering key aspects of international relations relating to both energy and broader geopolitical trends. This includes the US’ relationships with key actors such as China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, and the EU, as well as a broad range of international policy issues covered from Washington.
- Cultivate direct relationships with US officials, legislators, lobbyists, and other sources involved in the formulation and execution of US foreign policy, as well as representatives from other countries and the private sector working on international policy issues in the US.
- Write original and thought-provoking analysis of US foreign policy and other international relations issues, which stretches beyond and challenges conventional narratives to explain the context and dynamics at play.
- Swiftly produce differentiated daily coverage of breaking news from Washington and contribute US perspectives on international developments.
As part of a growing and dynamic team, the reporter may also be required to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required of them. Some travel will be required.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Previous reporting experience covering US foreign policy and/or other international geopolitical issues;
- A passion for primary source reporting, and the ability to develop direct contacts with key decision-makers;
- Basic experience of energy (oil, natural gas, renewables, and nuclear) preferred but not essential;
- A proven track record of breaking exclusive news;
- Excellent writing skills, including the ability to explain complex subjects in accessible and insightful prose;
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to attend conferences and events;
- Strong analytical skills to gather information and spot and explain important trends;
- The ability to prioritize and deliver daily, weekly, and long-term assignments on time;
- Bachelor’s degree or other relevant professional training/diploma or equivalent experience;
- Excellent written and verbal English with a preference for competency in a second language;
- Multimedia experience is a plus.
