Download.com seeks senior editor

Download.com is the premier site for consumers to discover, try, and buy software. Download’s editors deliver expertise and insights to help readers connect to the software and mobile apps that are best for them, through unbiased product reviews, recommendations, videos, news, and other advice.

You are a software expert and an ace editor with an impressive portfolio of consumer tech coverage. As part of Download.com’s editorial team, your beat will be Mac software and Android apps, and you will develop an coverage strategy that will include product reviews, features, videos, and other analysis and advice. We’re looking for an editor who’s intrepid, opinionated, and gifted at explaining complex issues clearly, concisely, and engagingly.

Other duties include cultivating working relationships with software developers, steering content through the editing and production process, securing products to review, and developing a following on the site and on social media. While broadcast experience isn’t essential, you may be on camera for videos and media appearances. Some travel is necessary, particularly to industry events, trade shows, and product launches, where you’ll be required to write news stories, appear in videos, and shoot photos.

A successful Download.com editor is detail oriented, critically minded, and naturally curious, bringing passion and creativity to the job every day.

Job will be located in our San Francisco office.

Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years of experience writing about consumer technology, especially software (please submit clips or links)
Extensive knowledge of Mac and Android software
Strong writing and editing skills
Understanding of SEO and social media
Familiarity with online publishing and knowledge of basic HTML
Familiarity with analytics such as Omniture and YouTube
Photography and on-camera video experience a plus
BA/BS or equivalent experience

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
