District Fray Magazine seeks an editorial assistant

District Fray Magazine is a lifestyle and entertainment publication focused on all facets of modern life in the D.C. area with an emphasis on hyperlocal happenings. We highlight the voices in the District keeping their fingers on the pulse of what makes our city vibrant and unique. Our goal is to be a go-to source that Washingtonians can rely on to stay informed about what to do in and around the city through the lens of inclusive, eclectic and objective content. Print:

  • Writes regularly for our print magazine
  • Helps copyedit, fact-check and format all print content
  • Keeps a pulse on local news and happenings to support the magazine’s content curation
  • Helps cull through pitches and story ideas from PR and other magazine connections
  • Reports to the deputy editor on all facts of the editorial process, from brainstorming and researching ideas to developing themes for upcoming content
  • Supports all production week needs for the print magazine in support of the editorial team
  • Supports post-production tasks, such as issue announcements on social media, reaching out to interviewees and making sure all content lives in digital form in a timely manner

Digital:

  • Writes regularly for the website, and helps edit, format, schedule and publish all pieces
  • Adds daily events to the events calendar
  • Manages and audits events calendar, and helps delegate to interns when new events come in through request
  • Checks, edits and posts submitted events
  • Help research, write and edit content in expansion markets (Jacksonville, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona)

Other Comms // Media:

  • Assists posting to Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts
  • Supports deputy editor in day-to-day management of quarterly interns
  • Helps editorial team with mailing processes for magazine distribution
  • Edits content for marketing, sales and events as needed
  • Supports deputy editor with biweekly editorial newsletters
  • Completes administrative projects such as organizing and archiving previous issues

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of professional journalism, media or communications experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, media or a related field
  • Published clips or relevant writing samples (from the past year if possible)
  • Availability to work in person full-time
  • Keen understanding of the digital media landscape, including various social media platforms
  • Exceptional written // verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic, entrepreneurial hustle and desire to improve skill set
  • Working knowledge of WordPress and SEO
  • Passion for creating content for our social media channels
