The Dallas Morning News is seeking to hire a Deputy Breaking News Editor who will help lead a team of reporters and editors covering breaking and trending stories with urgency, immediacy and creativity in the fourth-largest metro area in the United States.
Our team of breaking reporters has covered it all from tragic events that have held our city and country rapt to severe winter weather that has paralyzed North Texas to daily trending stories on topics ranging from Mark Cuban to SpaceX to Dolly Parton.
If you love leading journalists through rapidly evolving breaking news stories in the 24-hour digital news cycle or helping them identify and explore interesting and noteworthy cultural, social or local trends, we want you to talk to you.
This team strives to lead in our region when news breaks, with an emphasis on smart and insightful coverage that readers can’t get anywhere else. We want to be swift, authoritative and thorough – not just first, but sticking with stories that evolve over days and weeks.
Our breaking and trending team supports the entire newsroom by helping swarm big news events and breaking news across beats. You also would have the opportunity to shepherd some people-driven enterprise stories off breaking news events and help reporters dig into important topics in a state that has no shortage of news.
The team includes eight breaking news reporters and two trending reporters, the latter having an eye on viral opportunities and working closely with the Audience team.
This editor must have strong news judgment, a keen sense of urgency and immediacy and be experienced in leading reporters in tense, fast-moving situations. They’ll also need to be adept at making smart decisions as news develops quickly.
An understanding of and an interest in audience behavior and newsroom analytics is important. You’ll need to be thinking about SEO and newsgathering tactics that help grow our audience and position The Dallas Morning News as the leading news outlet in North Texas.
The ideal candidate understands and advocates for all kinds of content, from strong visuals to video and infographics using varied forms of storytelling. You also must be good at working well with others across the newsroom, especially on deadline during stressful times.
