Dallas Biz Journal seeks a digital reporter

The Dallas Business Journal is seeking a Digital Reporter.

The Digital Reporter contributes to the Business Journal’s digital content across all platforms, including web, email and social media. The ideal candidate will thrive in a newsroom that values scoops and exclusives above all else and knows its audience and market exceptionally well.

The primary goal of the Digital Reporter is to craft timely and compelling digital products that drive loyal engagement, grow audience and extend the Business Journal brand. The Digital Reporter curates and writes daily posts, produces interactive features, galleries and event coverage to complement the Business Journal’s strong digital platform. The Digital Reporter’s contributions will help the newsroom provide a rich digital experience that serves the Business Journal audience.

Skills

• Solid news judgment

• Good reporting and writing skills with the speed required in a digital breaking-news environment

• A desire to work collaboratively

• Familiarity with SEO and site/traffic/engagement metrics

• Able to balance high standards for content quality with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives

• Able to develop relationships and connect with sources

• Demonstrated use of databases to build interactive elements and features

• Able to understand and interpret site metrics

• Multimedia interest and acumen — video and audio, especially. The ability to create simple infographics/maps is a plus

• Knowledge of HTML a plus

Duties

• Curate and update breaking news content

• Report and write original content

• Generate and execute digital content ideas and regular features

• Produce interactive features, galleries and video

Experience

• Digital reporting experience

• Robust social media user

• Business reporting a plus

Education

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
