Daily Record seeks a managing editor

The Daily Record is Maryland’s only daily business and legal news source. Our dynamic and creative team provides essential and trusted legal and business information to Maryland professional community. Our modern offices are located in downtown Baltimore on the 24th floor of St. Paul Place.

Managing Editor

The Daily Record, a long-established, award-winning news organization that covers business, legal affairs, and state government in Maryland, is seeking a managing editor to help oversee its daily print and digital operations.

Organizationally we are making a sincere effort to create an equitable, welcoming and inclusive culture. We are seeking leaders who both understand and can mitigate the impact of unconscious bias in all aspects of the workplace.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff reporters and freelance contributors to conceive and execute insightful coverage for our audiences
  • Lead a multimedia newsroom providing local, essential niche content online, email newsletters, blogs, social media and print.
  • Edit and post stories and commentaries
  • Assist in the production of the daily newspaper and digital edition
  • Help develop new editorial products and expand coverage areas and audiences
  • Collaborate with other departments and other organizations within Bridgetower Media
  • Work with the Editor to carry out the vision of the organization
  • Keep abreast of industry developments, audience analytics and emerging editorial technologies
  • Help create compelling webinars and thought leadership event
  • Various administrative duties

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or relevant work experience
  • 5+ years of experience in the news industry with editing and management experience
  • Knowledge of business, legal affairs, and state government
  • Strong computer skills and digital news management. Including but not limited to: Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe InCopy, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
  • Reader and Acrobat, and internet research skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
