Current seeks a reporter

The reporter produces news coverage for Current, an independent news service covering public media — including PBS, NPR and stations — through a website and quarterly print publication. We operate a fully remote workplace as an editorially independent journalistic service of the American University School of Communication.

The reporter has special responsibility for covering a beat and contributes to collaborative reporting projects with Current’s editorial team and outside contributors. The reporter produces coverage for digital and print publication, proposing ideas for delivering fast-turnaround news briefs, in-depth coverage and audience engagement that are consistent with Current’s editorial priorities.

Media professionals turn to Current for news and insights that help them excel at their jobs and strengthen public service media. Recognizing high expectations for professionalism among our readers, the reporter aims to meet Current’s standards for writing quality, journalistic integrity, fairness, accuracy, readability, analysis, insight and engagement. The reporter helps maintain Current’s expected range and volume of coverage and meets firm deadlines, helping to maintain copy flow to editors and timely completion of stories.

Essential Functions:

  1. Research, report and write original coverage. Gather information and multiple perspectives for enterprise reporting through interviews, data analysis, reading, observation and travel to conferences and news events. Check facts, spellings, numbers and assumptions to confirm details of news events. Produce timely and valuable material for digital coverage; report on developing stories; identify opportunities for developing interactive data and multimedia presentations and assist in producing them.
  2. Revise work in progress and collaborate with editors in preparing coverage for online and print publication. Collect photos, artwork, graphics and multimedia elements and advise editors on their suitability for publication. Take and edit photos, record audio and work with colleagues to develop multimedia material for publication.
  3. Produce social media posts and newsletters. Share links to Current news articles or report details of developing news. Adhere to Current’s editorial practices when assisting with social media posts and engagement strategies. Collaborate with digital editor and managing editor in responding to reader reactions.
  4. Work with Current staff on production, planning and discussion, and other aspects of its joint endeavor.

Work Environment:

  • Occasional travel to cover conferences or for field reporting.

Salary Range:

  • $54,000-$60,000/year, Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Strong command of journalistic writing and reporting techniques, including collecting and interpreting data.
  • Openness to critical feedback and editing.
  • Understanding of the evolving media landscape, particularly noncommercial and nonprofit media business models.
  • Active consumer of public media content.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and build trust with sources; commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in sourcing.
