CultureMap seeks a Dallas-Fort Worth general assignment reporter/writer

CultureMap is seeking a fast and flexible general assignments writer for its Dallas and Fort Worth sites. The ideal candidate has experience scoping out stories, cultivating sources, reporting on a variety of lifestyle topics, writing both breaking news and features, and “flipping” press releases and general research into comprehensive, readable stories.

They exhibit excellent news judgment, interviewing, writing, organizational, time management, and communication skills. This position requires someone who’s both a self-starter and a team player, who loves working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment in a virtual newsroom.

This position is entirely remote but must be based in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The DFW writer will contribute daily content to two CultureMap sites — Dallas and Fort Worth — and may pitch in on network-wide stories for our sites in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. The candidate must be adept at finding stories and self-managing tasks, while working closely with the DFW editor to accept and prioritize assignments. They must be comfortable at a digital-only publication with multiple daily deadlines. They can expect to write at least two stories a day and may be asked to help editors with other tasks, as needed.

CultureMap is a digital media company delivering daily lifestyle content in the categories of restaurants and bars, real estate, society, arts, entertainment, fashion and beauty, home and design, travel, innovation, and city life. Candidates should be plugged into these topics, have a sharp eye for news, and be knowledgeable about the cities we cover.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work directly with DFW editor to meet daily content goals
  • Write 2+ daily articles for Dallas and Fort Worth CultureMap sites
  • Contribute to network-wide content, special projects, and editorial series
  • Help with other editorial tasks, as needed
  • Represent CultureMap editorial at events, as needed

Key attributes:

  • Excellent news judgment, reporting, writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to turn around stories quickly and accurately, with minimal editing
  • Ability to write engaging headlines and social media posts
  • Knowledge of major DFW institutions, geography, and culture
  • Passion for covering a range of lifestyle news
  • Ability to identify gaps in releases and find information elsewhere
  • Proven ability to multitask and juggle fast deadlines and longer-term features
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Ability to learn and work in a customized content management system
  • Proactive, hard-working, and team-oriented
