Crain’s New York seeks managing editor

Crain’s New York Business seeks a managing editor with serious magazine-making skills and proven management experience.

The ideal candidate will possess boundless creative energy and a proven track record of generating story ideas and workIng with reporters to execute them across platforms. Reporting to the executive editor, this is the No. 2 position in our newsroom.

The managing editor provides day-to-day newsroom leadership, overseeing online news coverage while spearheading the publication of our print magazine and ensuring that our print stories and recurring print features are executed at the highest level.

The managing editor also plays a key role in developing and executing the broader editorial strategies of Crain’s New York Business, working with the executive editor to produce conferences, events, multimedia projects, special issues and other editorial extensions of the highly trusted Crain’s New York brand. The managing editor will also help develop and implement a strategy to grow the Crain’s audience through partnerships with other media organizations.

Requirements Requirements
The position requires several years of business journalism experience as a reporter and editor.

It also requires:
• A proven mastery of storytelling and editing that shows a keen ability to turn potentially obtuse topics, especially in business, into compelling reads; someone who sees the big picture story in the everyday and knows how to frame a story so that it is made fascinating and informative for an audience that works in, invests in, owns or manages a business in New York.
• You must be able to quickly turn raw copy into polished, engaging stories with the edge, sophistication and authority readers expect from Crain’s New York. A knack for headlines is a must as well as an understanding of how art and data can also tell stories.
• A strong news judgment and a thorough understanding of business, finance and economics. Knowledge of the New York City business and political community a definite plus.
• A competitive, nature; immunity to corporate and government spin and intimidation; determination to strip away the veneer of PR palaver and get the real story; ability to motivate reporters and work collaboratively with wide-ranging personality types across the newsroom;
• An ability to represent Crain’s New York at public events, including our own newsmaker forums and Crain conferences, and in local media.
