Crain’s New York Business seeks a data editor

Crain’s New York Business is seeking a data editor to dig deep into available business data to compile many of our high-profile research projects and lists. The data editor is the point person for data projects across all platforms, including online, email, print and social.

The New York data editor will be part of a four-city data team whose data products are published digitally and in print in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and New York.

The data editor’s primary duty will be to help collect and verify data for lists and other editorial projects, including the leading business resource in all four markets, the Book of Lists. The data editor will also help develop and execute custom research projects emanating from our sales team.

Responsibilities

  • Survey and analyze a wide range of topics, from public-company performance, mergers and acquisitions, CEO pay and more

  • Utilize a digital survey tool to send surveys to collect data for “top company” lists, occasionally drafting new survey questions and cover letters

  • Process survey submissions, looking for inaccuracies/red flags with vigilance and editing text when necessary

  • Verify questionable information via online research, emails and phone calls

  • Contact past respondents who have not submitted information after sending multiple email surveys and find new contact information when old contacts go out of date

  • Use every available resource (the web, public sources, our own reporters, business associations, etc.) to find organizations and data to populate the lists.

  • Direct data-driven enterprise stories, while also generating story ideas from market knowledge and trends gained through research duties

  • Generate and produce, in coordination with the visual team, digital features based on data that include infographics and other elements to enhance online products.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should possess strong news judgment, analysis and writing skills. A proven track record with data gathering and reporting, ideally with business news, is required.

Additionally, candidates must also:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree

  • Have experience with computer data-management applications and a proven ability to work with databases and spreadsheets to find patterns and stories.

  • Be self-motivated and exhibit the ability to juggle multiple projects in various stages of completion, while being attentive to detail.

  • Demonstrate the ability to be conceptual, as the data editor works collaboratively with the editing team to brainstorm and execute new sections and other newsworthy products.

Preferences

  • Experience in business news research

  • A bachelor’s degree in library science/information science, journalism or a data-related field

  • Experience working for a journalistic publication

  • Experience working in or currently pursuing a degree in library science, research, database management or journalism

  • Experience using a digital survey tool or creating survey questions
