Crain's DetroitWe’re looking for a dynamic, self-starting reporter to cover the city of Detroit and entrepreneurship for Crain’s Detroit Business. This position requires 5+ years of reporting experience, with a demonstrated ability to develop sources, break news and write features.

Detroit’s bankruptcy reorganization and its efforts to keep its financial stabilization and turnaround intact has made the city a national story. Crain’s philosophy on all beat coverage is to avoid “herd journalism” – even when covering a national story in our own backyard. We are looking for a reporter to uncover the unique business angles within the city’s rebound. In addition, we are looking for a reporter with the courage and contacts to hold Detroit’s leaders accountable when they fail, a front-of-the-pack thinker and writer who will inform and enlighten the broad community of Crain readers.

This dual-beat reporter will also cover entrepreneurship in the region, from small business to the second-stage growth stories and social entrepreneurship that Detroit is becoming known for. The beat also encompasses policy topics pertaining to smaller enterprises and how entrepreneurs develop as leaders.

Our ideal candidate has experience in data-driven reporting and is as comfortable landing scoops as he/she is writing insightful analysis. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated eye for details, clear and accurate writing skills — and an ability to make complex issues compelling and approachable for both web and print reports.

The candidate must be adept at using multimedia storytelling tools and demonstrate a track record for building audience and engaging with followers on social media.

Covering the city of Detroit and entrepreneurship for Crain’s Detroit Business presents perhaps a once-in-a-career opportunity to cover a city with big opportunities and big challenges while also chronicling inspiring stories of entrepreneurship (of which metro Detroit also is becoming a national magnet for.) If you’re seeking a challenge and the opportunity to work at one of the best regional business publications in the country, please apply!
