Crain’s Detroit seeks a commercial real estate reporter

Crain’s Detroit Business, the premier source of business news in southeast Michigan, is seeking to expand its market-leading real estate coverage with a data-focused commercial real estate reporter.

This candidate will join an experienced, collaborative team devoted to covering all aspects of the real estate industry for a highly engaged and sophisticated audience. You will work with our current commercial and residential real estate reporters to elevate our coverage on multiple platforms. Ability to create and maintain databases to track industry trends is a must.

Our goal is to break every important real estate story in metro Detroit through a combination of deep sourcing, relentless reporting and a continued focus on delivering what our audience wants.

This full-time position is Detroit-based and requires a collaborative, creative mindset; participation in Crain webinars and events that elevate our brand; and a competitive drive to make Crain’s Detroit Business the authority on real estate coverage statewide and beyond. Responsibilities:

  • Generate audience-informed, digitally driven enterprise and daily coverage for a sophisticated readership
  • Develop sources within the real estate industry with a goal of breaking news; collaborate with other reporters on real estate team on multimedia projects
  • Help generate ideas for, and participate in, Crain webinars and events related to the beat

      Requirements:

  • At least five years of experience in a digital-focused newsroom, including reporting, editing or producing
  • Comfort with Excel and ability to create and maintain databases
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • Skilled at generating story ideas, writing cleanly and quickly, developing sources among key decision-makers and CEOs, breaking news, and working quickly with minimum supervision
  • Experience writing for all platforms: digital, print, newsletters; ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of financial and business terminology
  • Ability to work in newsroom during standard office hours and as needed outside of those hours
  • Portfolio / examples of recent and relevant work that demonstrates business journalism experience

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
