Crain’s Detroit business seeks digital editor

Crain’s Detroit Business is seeking a Digital Innovation Editor to join its team.

The Digital Innovation Editor will be the hands-on lead for digital operations and the production go-to person in the newsroom. He or she will work closely with the Director of Digital Strategy and Audience Development in tying newsroom innovation to the overall goals of both Crain’s Detroit Business and Crain Communications.

This person will be a liaison between the newsroom and the corporate product development and engineering team on daily and long-term website needs. Often, efforts will require cross-publication cooperation and will result in innovations that impact other Crain websites as well.

The position involves tasks of web production, development and analytics, and involves day-to-day responsibility for digital integration of products and content across platforms.

Key responsibilities:

Working with digital strategy manager and newsroom editors to identify digital storytelling opportunities, then developing solutions that enhance and extend the reporting and presentation of content across digital platforms.

Provide “digital-first” thinking and knowledge of best practices in digital, with the goal of extending value for readers.

Collaborate with peers and with corporate product teams to map and deliver on plans for products that take Crain’s Detroit Business forward digitally and across all platforms.

Day-to-day responsibilities:

Act as a production and technical resource within the newsroom, communicating with corporate resources and vendors to ensure the website functions at all times to meet the publication’s standards and readers’ expectations.

Work with reporters and editors to develop skills and tools to enable all newsroom members to present content in digitally smart ways.

Work with data editor, reporters and editors to implement databases and data enhancements to all content; ensure that website data center continues to grow with content developed based on newsroom reporting.

Work with Digital Strategy Director, the newsroom and with the corporate product team to set and communicate new product timelines, outline requirements, approve product specs and provide other documentation for products and production initiatives for the website and digital platforms.

Help to provide direction to the Crain product development team for projects identified by publication managers, from product ideation through testing and ongoing refinement of product features, within budget and on time.

Track and report important metrics to the newsroom and management team.

Assist in content curation, editing and production as needed for website, daily and for bigger projects.
