Crain’s Chicago Business is seeking a Managing Editor — Digital. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of editing experience with a proven track record of converting loyal readers into paying subscribers.
The managing editor for digital is part of a growing editorial team, overseeing the preparation of online editorial content and the curation of newsletters as well as serving as a key point person between the newsroom and several other aspects of the organization, including our events and marketing teams. This person is expected to be a champion of newsroom analytics and best digital practices and will act as the main liaison between the editorial team and members of Crain Communications’ corporate audience development group.
The ideal candidate is passionate about digital and web technologies and always seeking ways to increase their digital IQ. They are also able to develop and teach their skills to others on the team through clear communication and translating emerging technology ideas into easily understood information. This role offers a variety of challenges from reporting and analysis, so versatility, punctuality, communication, and the ability to multi-task are a must.
Responsibilities:
- Work with newsroom leadership to define and implement strategy aimed at increasing engagement with our growing digital audience
- Use analysis and insight to optimize our paywall to drive conversions
- Update and maintain CCB’s social media channels to keep them current and maximize engagement
- Drive the newsroom’s understanding of readership trends to increase conversions and better serve Crain’s audience
- Coordinate the use of digital and multimedia assets, such as photos, graphics, quizzes, polls, video and audio
- Maintain and conduct quality assurance checks on digital products
- Adjust and experiment with headlines to make sure stories have maximum impact and extend their shelf life using analytics and current best practices in SEO
Basic Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience as a digital editor or similar role
- Strong journalism/newsroom experience
- Ability to quickly understand new technologies
- Expert knowledge of creating and editing content and site setup using a CMS platform
- Knowledge of HTML/CSS/JavaScript to enhance digital content through use of multimedia elements
- Experience using Photoshop to create and modify images, sprites and other visual elements
- Online portfolio or body of work which includes recent, original multimedia journalism
- Proven ability in SEO and social media best practices
- Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and communication skills
- Fluency in digital analytics
Preferences:
- An understanding of Metrics For News
- Knowledge of Drupal
- Fluency with Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics or Chartbeat
- Experience writing headlines, captions and content
- B2B or business newsroom experience
- Knowledge of Chicago business and political news
