Consumer Reports seeks head of video

The Director of Video at Consumer Reports is responsible for overseeing a multi-faceted TV, digital video and podcast operation for the nation’s leading consumer intelligence publisher and nonprofit advocacy group. This strategically oriented, results-driven leader will build upon a strong video strategy supporting Consumer Reports’ overall mission and business – including content, engagement, distribution and monetization approaches other than advertising.

Qualifications Include:
  • 7+ years’ experience in content programming and production for Web video & TV – including integrating all facets of content creation and production/post-production needs. Journalism background a plus.
  • Team management experience, including recruiting, hiring, and performance management.
  • Experience translating business and strategic objectives into a coherent content, engagement and monetization framework.
  • Ability to harness creative, analytically rigorous, and strategic/visionary personalities in a matrixed environment to create visual experiences that matter.
  • Industry professional active in relevant digital media groups and with an established personal network in the space.

Excellent manager of people and resources: Understands how to run large operations efficiently and effectively, balancing use of internal and external resources and making teams of people feel valued and able to deliver their best.

Editorial Excellence: Must have strong scripting skills and ability to teach producers and editors of varied skill levels how to deliver excellence in video.

Strategic and Analytical Thinking: Must operate strategically within a large organization; deal with a wide range of senior people; be able to broker agreements and get things done.

Understands what it means to work for a mission-led organization and how to ensure that advocacy goals are effectively incorporated into content strategies and content where applicable.

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Video is responsible for overseeing a multi-faceted TV, digital video and podcast operation. This role will build upon a strong video strategy supporting Consumer Reports’ overall mission and business – including content, engagement, distribution and monetization approaches other than advertising.  This role will:

  • Run editorial components of a production unit delivering 150+ annual editorial reports for national and Canadian broadcast TV affiliates as well as a wide-breadth of short and long-form digital videos for multiple platforms including Consumer Reports online, MSN, Yahoo!, YouTube and others.
  • Oversee creative output for staff and freelance producers, videographers, editors and managers – including hands-on work with scripts.
  • Galvanize Consumer Reports staff of testers, lab technicians and editors to generate and execute new programming concepts.
  • Oversee video materials and live events for marketing and internal communications, including office of the CEO.
  • Balancing creative vision with business acumen, help evolve CR’s video strategy and make the case for investments necessary to achieve that growth.
  • Work with Manager of Video operations to oversee video revenue, licensing and distribution arrangements, video operations and budget. Work closely with Executive Director of Content to identify areas for growth through new audience acquisition, engagement, distribution, and monetization.
  • Coordinate with content, design, digital product, marketing, and media relations teams to create unique video and multimedia experiences to amplify and expand Consumer Report’s impact as an organization.
  • Conceive and create new approaches to visual storytelling such as interactive video and social video.
  • Ensure video is consistent with and projects CR’s overall brand values, while finding ways to stretch that experience to capture the hearts and minds of consumers not yet reached.
  • Develop internal on-camera talent and work with external talent where it makes sense to support CR’s strategy.
  • Serve as a key voice of CR in the digital media and video communities and stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, identifying opportunities to improve CR’ methods, infrastructure and staff skills
  • Performs other duties as assigned
