Community Journals seeks a managing editor

We’re Community Journals, the company behind the Greenville Journal, Upstate Business Journal, TOWN, vive and atHome magazines. Our team is committed to telling great stories and deepening our connection with the community we serve. We are locally owned and passionate about informing, connecting, and inspiring the people of Greenville, SC. We are currently adding to our Greenville Journal and Upstate Business Journal editorial team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The Managing Editor manages the daily, weekly, and monthly day-to-day activities and production of the Greenville Journal and Upstate Business Journal for print, online and newsletters.

  • Assists in organizing and assigning stories to writers.
  • Reviews news releases and story ideas from writers  that come in (online, email, etc.) and assigns as appropriate.
  • Assists in monitoring other local and national news sources as well as all digital platforms for story ideas and breaking news.
  • Participates in editorial planning, including weekly editorial meetings and planning of monthly content.
  • Occasionally writes news briefs and stories for online and print.
  • Assists, as needed, with excerpts, pull quotes or gathering supplemental assets to create multiple entry points into a story. Ensure all content is heavily supported with photographs, video, graphics, and other visual assets. Work with writers and other staff to strategize ideas on visual components.
  • Reviews newsletters prior to publication to ensure subject lines, content and photos are engaging for our readers.
  • Conducts first read of stories and final pdf proofing to ensure AP accuracy, readability and basic fact checks for accuracy.
  • Ensure all corrections from proofing of pdf’s are made in WordPress from non-staff members.
  • Mentor and coach writers on areas of improvement needed with writing, AP style, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, writing or related field. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • The ability to identify and hone writers’ skills for storytelling and new approaches to writing.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style and media ethics.
  • An understanding of digital journalism and developments in digital storytelling.

NOTE: This position does not offer relocation assistance and needs to be local to Greenville, SC.
