Columbus Business First seeks a reporter

Columbus Business First is looking for a full-time staff reporter to cover higher education, the business of sports, the arts, and the hospitality and tourism industry. These are high-profile beats in a dynamic, growing city that has become a magnet of the Midwest, attracting new residents from across Ohio and the region drawn by its growing economy, affordable cost of living, network of universities, and other amenities.

Columbus is home to Ohio State University, one of the largest colleges in the U.S. with a storied athletic program, as well as the Columbus Blue Jackets and Columbus Crew SC. The city has a vibrant arts scene with multiple performing arts organizations, historic theaters, and a regular festival circuit.

Duties

Our reporters are competitive, collaborative and curious, driven to produce scoops as well as trend pieces, analysis and profiles. They write for both the daily report and the weekly print edition, juggling multiple deadlines and schedules. They are embedded in the community, meeting with sources regularly and attending industry and Business First events.

Skills

• Excellence in reporting and writing.
• Strong analytical and interviewing skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• A drive to develop sources and build an audience.
• Multimedia skills, including video and photos.

Experience

• Experience developing a beat.
• Proven record of reporting, researching and writing various types of stories.
• Knowledge of business principles.

Education

B.A. journalism or equivalent work experience.
