As a member of our full-time faculty, the incumbent will also oversee what has become the preeminent academic year-long fellowship for mid-career journalists devoted to the study of business and economics. The incumbent will have demonstrated achievement and the highest professional reputation in business and economics journalism. The candidate should also be a distinguished business journalist and thought leader devoted to the improvement of business journalism on a national level, while able to take advantage of the University’s location in the center of the world’s capital of business and media.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a faculty position, including an ability to teach graduate students at a major research university. The School and professorship embrace diversity and seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students. Candidates should have a strong background in journalism and must be up to date with best practices, digital workflow and modern tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. A work history that shows a capacity to innovate and to be nimble in a fast-changing news environment is also important.
Recipients of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowships receive full tuition at Columbia University and a stipend for living expenses. As Director of this Program, the incumbent is responsible for raising funds to cover these costs, and managing an annual budget of more than $1.5 million and an endowment with a market value of more than $25 million. Other duties include recruiting and advising students enrolled in the Program, and organizing seminars and events for the Fellows.
This position is expected to begin on July 1, 2021, pending budgetary and administrative approval.
