Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is looking for a science writer

We are seeking a freelance science writer and/or journalist to help document the proceedings of a 2.5 day conference to be held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, (Lloyd Harbor NY) in mid-May 2022. This small (~30 person) think-tank style discussion will convene a group of international experts to address problems and opportunities in instruction for professional development targeting life science researchers and educators. The writer will also provide editorial assistance on compilation of the proceedings into a whitepaper.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Founded in 1890, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has shaped contemporary biomedical research and education with programs in cancer, neuroscience, plant biology and quantitative biology. Home to eight Nobel Prize winners, the private, not-for-profit Laboratory employs 1,000 people including 600 scientists, students and technicians. The Meetings & Courses Program hosts more than 12,000 scientists from around the world each year on its campuses in Long Island and in Suzhou, China. The Laboratory’s education arm also includes an academic publishing house, a graduate school and programs for middle, high school, and undergraduate students and teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected applicant will be responsible for:

  • Attending the scheduled sessions of the meeting (~8AM – 5PM, ending by noon at 12PM on the last day), note taking and management for all sessions, and participation in synthesis discussions. In-person attendance is highly preferred (travel costs covered) so the applicant will ideally be in commuting distance. For an exceptionally qualified candidate, virtual attendance may be considered.
  • Regular communication before, during, and after the conference with the investigators and participant authors.
  • Post-conference, providing editorial assistance as we develop a proceedings white paper and/or other format for publication.

  • Experience in producing conference proceedings and/or meeting reports
  • Track record of manuscript production and publication in recognized science journals
  • Familiarity with higher education and learning sciences and/or life sciences is desirable but not required

COMPENSATION

  • $100 per hour/ up to 35 hours of support – This is not a CSHL laboratory position and will be funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation to principal investigators Jason Williams (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory) and Rochelle Tractenberg (Georgetown University) and will be managed through a contract with CSHL.
