Cody Enterprise seeks a sports editor/education reporter

The Cody Enterprise, a twice-weekly, award-winning newspaper in Cody, Wyoming, is looking for a sports editor and education reporter.

As the sports editor, you will play a key role in shaping the sports coverage of our newspaper. In this multifaceted role, you will be responsible for providing insightful and engaging coverage of local sports and ensuring the accuracy and relevance of all sports-related content. Additionally, you will oversee the planning, development and execution of special sections, which includes coordinating with reporters and freelancers. As the education reporter, you will be in charge of covering all things education related, from unique and interesting classroom happenings to how state legislation is affecting our local school district.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the sports department and manage all aspects of sports coverage, including researching, writing, and editing articles, features, and gamers.
  • Attend local sports events, conduct interviews and build relationships with athletes, coaches and community members to gather accurate and compelling stories.
  • Take photos of local sports related events and weekend happenings.
  • Conceptualize, plan and oversee the production of special sections, coordinating with the editorial and advertising teams.
  • Cover all things related to schools and local education, including covering school board meetings, school events, education updates at the state level and more.
  • Assist in proofreading and fact-checking articles for accuracy, grammar and spelling.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
  • Proven experience in sports journalism, preferably as an editor or reporter, with a strong understanding of sports.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to write engaging sports stories and educational features.
  • Proficiency in AP style and experience with InDesign a plus.
  • Photography knowledge also a plus.
