CNBC Digital seeks small business reporter

CNBC Digital is looking for an experienced and creative reporter and writer to be part of a major new digital initiative aimed at helping entrepreneurs—both the aspirational and the experienced—chase the American dream.

A self-starter, this writer will relish the challenge of rethinking and expanding our current small business and entrepreneur coverage, both on CNBC.com and for distribution to our many partner sites. This candidate will be a key part of the team that will build a storytelling platform and community for the aspirational—the dissatisfied Americans whose hard work will shape the next phase of their lives

The writer will be responsible for pitching and creating engaging content that inspires and guides entrepreneurs through every stage of their careers, and will work closely with Digital Video and CNBC’s daytime and primetime teams. The ideal candidate will have strong reporting skills, experience covering business and financial news and the ability to handle deadline pressure. Experience working in multiple media formats a major plus.

This is a full-time staff position at CNBC headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Specific Responsibilities

• Generate story ideas, report and create digital content.
• Format copy, including the addition of graphical elements, videos and polls and other multi-media elements to maximize engagement.
• Work with Digital Video team, TV news and primetime staffs to create entertaining, helpful packages for the aspirational.
• Contribute to multi-platform news coverage when needed.
• Use social media to distribute and promote content.
• Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

• 2+ years’ experience as a writer and/or reporter, including the ability to perform in a high-volume, multi-task/deadline oriented environment.
• Familiarity with digital conventions and activities.
• Must be highly motivated, extremely organized, detail-oriented, and possess outstanding communication and coordination skills.
• Proven ability to report and write accurately and clearly in a fast-paced news environment.
• Must be able to meet deadlines and possess good presentation skills.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
