Claremont Eagle Times seeks a managing editor

The Eagle Times, a six-day a week daily in scenic, historic Claremont, NH, is looking for an enterprising Managing Editor to take this growing newspaper to the next level. The Eagle Times is locally-owned and hyper-local. We will soon be reintroducing two weekly products – an area-wide weekly newspaper and a weekly TMC product – back into circulation. The editor will have a solid understanding of community journalism, an eye for engaging photos, and be able to build relationships with sources and dialogues with readers. This is not a desk job. You will be an active member of the news team along with mentoring a stable of young writers, free-lancers and correspondents. Mentoring and team building are important skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Be an active participant in content strategy and product introductions.
  2. Engage with the community on a daily level. Be seen and be active.
  3. Attend community and city/town meetings. Drive meeting coverage.
  4. Lead, manage, and build on our current team of journalists.
  5. Write and assign articles (including headlines, decks, captions, highlight and fact boxes.
  6. Develop an editorial calendar and coordinate with the Publisher, GM and Sales Manager on special section/content products.
  7. Be able to manage our website, E-editions, photo galleries and reader interactive web offerings with support from our Graphics crew.
  8. Develop new opportunities in our multi-media areas – podcasts, Eagle TV, videos and audio posts.
  9. Coordinate with Publisher, GM, and Sales Manager on potential unique special section development focused on building value to existing events, anniversaries and “new” additions to our communities.
  1. Understand the meaning of “community” in our mission and vision of service to our communities.

Requirements:

  1. Recent college graduate or working professional looking for opportunities in a growing newspaper group.
  2. Demonstrated news judgment via writing samples/story budget archives.
  3. Experience and willingness to use new technology to engage and reach readers and subscribers.
  4. Solid interpersonal skills along with strong organizational and communication abilities.
  5. Strong copy editing/proofreading talents.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively and accept new ideas and feedback from management, co-workers and our communities.
