Civil Eats seeks an audience engagement editor

Civil Eats, a nonprofit news organization, seeks an audience engagement editor to join its hard-working team to reach, engage, and grow our readership with our award-winning reporting. The right person for this role cares deeply about food and agriculture policy, social justice, and environmental issues, is interested in following the news on these subjects closely and has a passion for bringing them to a wider audience. They are a sharp and engaging writer and a talented graphic designer who understands news trends and enjoys working remotely with a small, dedicated team. The audience engagement editor is a senior team member of our newsroom. This position is exempt.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Elevate Civil Eats’ journalism across platforms, from newsletters to search and social.
  • Oversee social media platforms and email communications, guiding high-level strategy, design, and rollout of campaigns and daily operations.
  • Manage all of our existing social accounts, actively seek opportunities to establish a brand presence on new and emerging platforms and amplify and translate Civil Eats’ reporting.
  • Identify timely, newsworthy opportunities to promote our archival content.
  • Build and implement programs that engage new and existing digital audiences.
  • Work with the membership manager to identify, test, and survey audience segments for deeper engagement.
  • Deepen audience understanding and connection, comprehensively and regularly track and measure performance metrics, and report results of initiatives.
  • Have a strong understanding of content SEO, and regularly audit editorial content to make sure it is optimized for search.
  • Center diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in digital engagement operations and initiatives.
  • Work with partners, vendors, and consultants in product development, cross-promotion, and collaborations.
  • Help produce and promote online and in-person audience events.
  • Create graphics, GIFs, and other social media assets as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience working with media in any of the following roles or some combination thereof: audience development, social media, marketing, and/or digital marketing.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in journalism, English, communications, or related field preferred.
  • Deep interest in and appreciation of food systems and independent media.
  • Strong writing, editing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Outstanding project management and analytical skills, including use of metrics to guide projects/decisions.
  • Proven audience growth experience via SEO, content marketing, A/B testing, and/or other timely methods.
  • Experience planning and implementing newsletter marketing activity.
  • Expertise with WordPress, Active Campaign, Google products, and assorted social media.
  • Strong knowledge of current developments in digital media communications.
  • Prior experience working in a newsroom highly desirable.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

Civil Eats offers a competitive and comprehensive salary and package of employee benefits. This 30-hr/week position starts at $70,000.

LOCATION:

Civil Eats operates a virtual newsroom, with the senior management team based on the West Coast. This position can be located anywhere in the U.S.
