Chronicle of Philanthropy seeks a copy editor

The copy editor ensures that Chronicle copy receives a high standard of copy editing, fact checking, and polishing. This editor works on stories for both the website and print, builds the daily newsletter, copy edits other newsletters, and does some web production, such as publishing articles online. The person in this position writes compelling headlines, captions, and pullquotes to draw in readers on all platforms.

This position has the option of being fully remote, in-office, or hybrid.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Copy Editing:

  • Fact-check and copy-edit articles and accompanying graphics, newsletters, videos, and promos (such as for webinars) for accuracy, grammar, logic, fairness, style, spelling, rhythm, and grace.
  • Write captivating headlines, blurbs, captions, social-media posts, and other elements with SEO in mind.
  • Polish stories and newsletters to be the best they can be.
  • Review website articles after they’ve been published as a quality-control measure.
  • Take a final look at print stories in Adobe InCopy and sign off on finished pages.

Production:

  • Post articles on the website, adding author bios, captions, sidebars, and pull quotes.
  • Assemble newsletters.
  • Learn to do production as a backup for when the production manager is away.

APPLICANTS MUST:

  • Have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of copy-editing experience.
  • Be adept at working in digital technology — such as updating websites — as well as print.
  • Have experience using SEO to draw in more readers.

A plus but not essential:

  • Familiarity with nonprofit issues
  • Experience using visualization tools such as Datawrapper
  • Familiarity with New York Times style
  • Familiarity with Slack and InCopy

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and story construction
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Solid news judgment
  • Excellent editing and writing skills
  • Up-to-date knowledge of SEO
  • Fundamental skills in Excel
  • Facility at learning new technology
  • Good collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to work fast and stay calm despite myriad interruptions
