Chicago Tribune seeks editor for business desk

The Business Department’s mission is something we call Name Brand Business, which means … what exactly?

Glad you asked. We cover the businesses, leaders and developments of the greatest importance and interest to our readers, who consistently tell us through their reading habits that personal relevance is paramount. We seek a dynamic source editor who can help the department reach the next level of this mission.

The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to develop reporters who are seeking business news possibilities in all news. We’re following all of the money, right?

Like the rest of our staff, this editor will work with reporters creating news stories to keep chicagobreakingbusiness.com alive and active. This candidate also will work with reporters to generate premium stories that go beyond the headlines. We need a superior editor who can develop reporters while staying nimble on breaking news of high interest in Chicago.

The candidate works fast for digital and understands the power of social media, with demonstrated skills to develop and expand their audience. The front door of chicagotribune.com is vastly important. But so are all the side doors into our coverage that Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms offer. We know when our audience is there. We have to meet them with fresh offerings, starting early in the morning and throughout the day.

We seek an energetic self-starter who is a collaborative partner with fellow editors and reporters in Business and throughout the newsroom.

Our goals:
-Break news to help readers understand the forces affecting their financial lives.
-Empower them to become better consumers, to help them get ahead in life.
-Build audience as readers share our compelling content.
-We are all Watchdog. We help readers solve their problems.
Candidates must be active and savvy in social media networks.
Videolicious training will be provided, so be ready to learn.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of reporting and/or editing experience. Experience editing business news is helpful but not a must. If you’re open to a re-imagined business report and are ready to embrace our mission, we want to talk to you.

Applicants should send a resume, cover letter and the five (or a few more, but don’t go crazy) clips you’re most proud of to Mike Kellams, associate managing editor for business, and Mary Ellen Podmolik, business editor, by emailing business@tribpub.com.

We’re moving quickly, so don’t delay.
