Chicago Tribune seeks an editorial board member

August 14, 2023

Posted by Mariam Ahmed

The Tribune has a vacancy on its editorial board for an experienced journalist.  Duties include writing editorials, participating in board meetings with local and national figures and candidates for political office, scheduling editorials and some editing of regular columnists and op-ed contributors. Opinion staffers function very much as a team with much sharing of duties; it is a small staff and, especially if someone is out of the office, everyone pitches in.

  • Applicants should be able to produce 400-1000 word editorials on local, national and international issues quickly and on an almost daily basis, given the size of the staff and the need to write 6-10 editorials a week
  • Rumination time is limited.
  • They should be comfortable with writing not under their own name but that of the paper’s institutional voice.
  • And while the board’s political philosophy has shifted some, it is crucial that applicants are willing and able to follow the board’s core principles, which include support for freedom of speech, limited government and free enterprise.
  • We strive to be viewed as the moderate adults in the room and we do pay attention, of course, to historical precedent.
  • The job is collaborative by nature and we are looking for a smart, kind, and good-humored self-starter with a clear sense of what our great newspaper should be saying about our city, nation and world.
  • Our seasonal endorsement process for candidates for political office is an especially crucial part of this job.

To apply, submit a resume, cover letter and links to samples of your best opinion-related work to newroomjobs@chicagotribune.com.  Please put Editorial Board Member in the subject line.
