Chicago Tribune Media seeks a general assignment reporter – Naperville Sun

Versatile general assignment journalist to cover news-rich suburban area near Chicago for the Naperville Sun, part of the Chicago Tribune Media Group. Needs to be aggressive reporter and skilled writer who can juggle breaking news assignments with compelling enterprise and trend pieces that are important to a local audience.

What you will do:

  • General assignment work for the Naperville Sun newspaper staff.
  • Work shifts will vary depending on news needs, but candidates should expect some night and weekend work.
  • A typical work week might involve analyzing public issues at a city council meeting, digging into the politics of the county board, responding to breaking news, crafting an engaging feature story and examining local issues in education.
  • This reporter will also take photos, seek out opportunities for investigations and projects, collaborate with other journalists and compile a weekly police blotter.

What you will bring:

  • The successful applicant has a track record of executing breaking and enterprise stories that demonstrate crisp writing, creative and insightful reporting and a commitment to serving the public good by exposing inequities and holding the powerful to account.
  • Reporters should have a proven knowledge of how government works at the local levels.
  • The reporter will have the ability to develop sources and the goal of becoming the No. 1 authority on the area they cover.
  • The reporter will be collaborative, creative, collegial, high energy and dogged in pursuit of the story.
