Cedar Rapids Gazette seeks business reporter

The Gazette, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking business reporter with strong digital skills to join its news team. The business reporter would be focused on an array of business related items – including local and regional economies and consumer behaviors.

The ideal candidate is fluent in economic concepts, is comfortable interviewing high-level business executives and tells stories for both consumer and business audiences. Candidates should bring a watchdog attitude and also must maintain a focus on original enterprise reporting. You must have a willingness to connect with the audience in an ongoing basis online.

The ideal candidate can spot trends, ask tough questions and has strong analytical chops. Ideal candidates can get past jargon and explain concepts in clear and concise ways. Ideal candidates should also have experience with explanatory and alternative storytelling and strong multimedia reporting skills.

Those who can describe themselves as flexible, self-motivated, creative go-getter, with strong multi-tasking  and problem solving skills are the best fit for this gig . We strive to reach audiences across platforms. Ideal candidates should be willing to utilize video opportunities to enhance coverage.

Candidate must be comfortable with basic Web skills and be able to use tools such as WordPress, Audacity, Final Cut (or equivalents).

The Cedar Rapids area features a strong manufacturing base and is home to nearly 30 Fortune 500 companies. The region also features a strong research and world class workforce training components associated with Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa in nearby Iowa City.

The position requires an Undergraduate degree in journalism, English or related course of study with at least 3 to 5 years experience in a multimedia newsroom. Candidate must demonstrate ability to work quickly and accurately and must have ideas on how to present news in an ever-changing media landscape.  A valid driver’s license and ability to be company insurable are required.

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
