Carolina Public Press, an award-winning nonprofit news organization devoted to investigative, in-depth and independent journalism for all of North Carolina, seeks a new executive director. The flexible start date is late 2023.
The executive director will lead a high-performing, mission-driven team of professionals to meet and surpass the goal of being North Carolina’s largest and highest-impact independent investigative nonprofit news organization. The executive director has leadership and oversight responsibility for an operating budget of nearly $1M from multiple and variable revenue sources.
This is a job for someone who is a strong and effective nonprofit leader, believes that nonprofit news organizations are critical to the future of the state and the nation, and wants to share the story of Carolina Public Press on a national stage.
The successful candidate need not be a journalist, but they will have a nuanced understanding of Carolina Public Press’s mission and place in the state’s news ecosystem. They will be able to articulate strategies for expanding its reach and impact. They will fully grasp the demands of investigative and accountability journalism, including the work, time, dedication and risk it takes.
Their leadership style will combine inspiration and collegiality with high expectations applied firmly and without bias. They will show a collaborative spirit both internally through cross-team efforts and externally through local, statewide and national collaborations that we lead or join.
The executive director reports to the Carolina Public Press Board of Directors. A strong candidate will have 7-10 years of top-level experience in managing nonprofit organizations. Some experience in the news industry is a plus. CPP’s next leader will have demonstrated competence in:
The salary range for this position is $90,000-$100,000, based on experience, education and potential.
The executive director may live anywhere in North Carolina. The Carolina Public Press team is largely remote, with staff members located across the state. You should expect to travel, both throughout North Carolina and nationally.
