Capital B seeks a copy editor

We are looking for a copy editor with a sharp eye for accuracy and cultural sensitivity to polish our content and ensure we deliver high-quality journalism as we grow and expand into new markets.

The copy editor will work with writers, line editors, and social media producers to publish error-free content across Capital B’s platforms. They will be responsible for editing stories, graphics, social media content and other textual elements in line with Capital B’s conversational style, ensuring clarity and consistency.

The ideal candidate is an experienced and collaborative journalist who knows how to draw attention to errors constructively and is eager to work with your colleagues to find solutions. They are adept at spotting when a passage needs more context and are at ease proposing better ways to frame a thought.

We’re a digital startup that values creativity and outside-of-the-box thinking, and in this role, you can help shape how Capital B presents its journalism in innovative ways. The ideal candidate will have an audience-first mindset with experience shaping journalism for Black readers, and will constantly think of ways to make our journalism more accessible.

This position will report to Capital B’s copy chief.

Salary: $65,000 to $75,000

Location: Remote

Responsibilities: Copy edit and fact-check stories, social posts, graphics, captions, and other display content for our local and national stories

What you’ll bring:

  • At least three years of journalism experience
  • Strong command of AP style
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Solid news judgment
  • A reader-centric focus that improves a story’s clarity, accuracy and readability
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
  • A solid understanding of what makes a great digital headline
  • Attention to detail
  • Empathy, kindness and patience
