Canadian Press seeks business reporter in Toronto

The successful candidate will join the multimedia journalists in our Business department at the national business desk in Toronto. Dedicated business reporters are also in Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary
  • Write, edit and gather multimedia content for CP’s various services (print, broadcast and video)
  • Generate and develop strong, national business stories on a daily basis, with a strong focus on consumer interest and personal finance stories.
  • Develop reliable business sources in key companies and industries
  • Break exclusive business stories
  • Write business-oriented features and analysis pieces
  • Occasional editing desk shifts and markets reporting

Requirements

  • 5 years of newsroom experience with a background in business journalism
  • Solid understanding of markets and financial statements
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course or some other financial statement analysis course would be an asset.
  • Ability to work under extreme deadline pressures.
  • Excellent knowledge and demonstrated experience using different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia.
  • Ability to disseminate complex financial information to a general audience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to edit and improve colleagues’ work on short notice.
  • Self-starter who is able to take initiative
  • Proven skills in using social media as a newsgathering tool.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
