Posted by Margarita Sanabria

We seek freelance reporters and editors with knowledge of political and social issues in one or more of the areas we cover—Santa Clara County, Sacramento County, Santa Cruz County, and the Lake Tahoe region—including an understanding of issues confronting members of under-represented communities.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

California Local is a self-funded startup staffed by veteran journalists and currently operating in eight counties, with plans to expand throughout the state. We produce original content in the form of statewide news and carefully reported explainers, as well as local directories and information resources. Through the California Local Media Alliance, we promote the work of local newsrooms via “Signal Boosters” and curated news digests.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this gig has a passion for community-building and is familiar with (or open to) the concept of solutions-based journalism—that’s the heart of our journalistic mission.

Some college education in journalism, or experience in newspaper, magazine or online news reporting or editing, is required. A straightforward, casual writing style is a big plus.

Write a short introduction about yourself
Include a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits
Attach links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
