Business Insider seeks energy reporter/editor

September 17, 2020

Posted by Chris Roush

Business Insider is looking for an experienced reporter to oversee and expand our coverage of the energy industry, ranging from oil to renewables. This role will initially be focused on reporting, with an opportunity to add more management and editing responsibilities over time.

The energy industry is going through an epic transformation, accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic, creating a big opportunity for an ambitious editor to make a mark in this role. Plunging oil prices and pressure from investors are pushing fossil fuel companies to decarbonize, as the impacts of climate change come into sharper focus. Meanwhile, a new crop of startups are developing clean-energy products and services with the backing of major venture capitalists.

We value coverage that takes readers inside the world’s largest companies and makes an impact. Our reporting first exposed Exxon’s employee ranking system, which it used to quietly cut staff as oil prices crashed. In response to our story on solar-panel marketing, Facebook removed ads that misled the public about the cost of solar energy. We’ve also made a mark through our fresh analyses and deep dives into opaque industries from biofuels to renewable energy certificates.

We’re looking for a reporter/editor who can thrive in a player-coach role, building the foundation for our scrappy energy team and guiding its expansion over time. You should be comfortable delivering major stories and scoops, while also shepherding our coverage of this industry. A successful person in this role will have a strong vision for how Business Insider’s energy coverage can stand apart and serve our global readers and the skills and drive to make that vision a reality.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Experience covering the energy industry, preferably with a focus on oil & gas or utilities
  • A track record of breaking news that matters on a competitive beat
  • The ability to work collaboratively and bring out the best in your teammates
  • A finely tuned vision for Business Insider’s energy coverage
  • The passion to go the extra mile to deliver stories for our readers that they can’t find anywhere else

This is a full-time position based in our New York office or another location, depending on the candidate. Business Insider offers competitive compensation packages complete with benefits.
