Buffalo’s food scene is vibrant and diverse. From burger joints to fine dining, microbrews to craft cocktails, bakeries to coffee shops, there’s something tasty for everyone. And Western New Yorkers have an insatiable appetite for information about that scene.

The Buffalo News, an award-winning news organization in New York’s second-largest city, is looking for a creative and energetic reporter to cover restaurant news, trends in the food and drink industry and the many food-related events happening in our region.

You don’t have to be a foodie or even a great cook to succeed on this beat, but you do have to be the kind of journalist who wants to be known for getting it first and getting it right. You should know the local food and drink scene and cover it with an adventurous spirit. The ideal candidate will understand the importance of food locally and how it affects so much of what we do here – and how we choose to spend our entertainment dollars.

This reporter will own coverage of local restaurants, bars, food trucks and pop-ups. They will be the go-to source for news about changes at readers’ favorite restaurants and hot new trends and the authority on where to go for a special dinner, an affordable meal or impress out-of-town guests. And they will be as enthusiastic about the opening of hot dog stands for the summer as they are about the newest white tablecloth bistro.

The beat includes a mix of quick-turn news and features, curated guides and longer-term enterprise, including:
•Timely items to get news out on topics like openings and closings.
•Multimedia “first looks” at new bars and restaurants.
•Features on interesting people, businesses.
•Guides on everything from where to find the “in” drink to what to eat at the weekend’s food festival.

Social media is an integral part of this beat, and the ideal candidate will use it to reach audiences and find and share food news. This reporter will run GustoEats on Instagram account and develop a presence on other social channels.

We strive to hire talented and dedicated people who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. People of all backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply. If you are the kind of reporter who is passionate about all things food and drink, we want to hear from you.

Why Buffalo? The city has seen a resurgence that makes it an exciting time to work and live here. The region has professional sports teams, a philharmonic, a growing waterfront, Niagara Falls, beautiful hikes and ski slopes all within a short drive. To apply, send a cover letter. clips and a resume.
